The Committee

The NEPD committee consists of practice owners and dentists who work to ensure that the aims of the organisation are met.

Oliver Bailey - Chairman

Ollie Bailey - Chairman

Ollie qualified from Newcastle University with honours in 2005, winning numerous awards relating to academic and clinical dentistry. He underwent further training at the Dental Hospital gaining membership to the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, before teaching undergraduate students alongside working in NHS practice. He then moved to Australia, working privately and travelling, before returning to the North East, where he has worked for the past few years in the aptly named Oliver’s Dental Studio. Ollie has an interest in minimally invasive aesthetic dentistry, being trained in and successfully using numerous tooth-straightening systems. He has recently started to lecture to other dentists interested in aspects of these techniques. Ollie has trained extensively on courses all around the world and as a member of the International Team for Implantology, implant based oral rehabilitation is another specific area of interest. He’s a big sports’ fan and will often be found in the North Sea trying to surf.

Richard Coates - Vice Chairman

Richard Coates - Vice Chairman

Qualified in December 1992, Richard has worked in fully NHS practices, mixed practice and fully private practice. He has worked full time as a private dentist for several years, and devotes a large portion of his day to ethical cosmetic restorative practice with a special interest in endodontic treatment of teeth. Richard is qualified in the placement and restoration of simple implant cases and has attended many implant courses including international conferences. Richard is also an active member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry attending  conferences across the states in order to keep abreast of new innovations in dentistry. As vice chairman of NEPD, he is committed to the quality that can be achieved through private dentistry and is keen to help support like minded colleagues through the organisation.

James Bough - Treasurer

James Bough - Treasurer

James qualified from Newcastle University with Merit in Clinical Dentistry and was awarded the John Hopkins prize for his support for fellow colleagues.

James has continued to further his skills and knowledge by completing a large number of postgraduate courses including dental implant courses at the Sheffield Implant Centre and Newcastle Dental Hospital, the Core Course in Conscious Sedation at Newcastle Dental Hospital, the Inman Aligner accreditation and Six Month Smiles course.

He is currently working towards his final examinations for the Diploma in Restorative Dentistry, which provides the skills and knowledge for advanced treatments for the most complex of cases.

In addition to dental qualifications, James has also carried out a number of facial aesthetic courses in order to provide treatments such as 'wrinkle relaxing injections', 'dermal fillers' and 'Genuine DermarollerTM therapy'

and is able to give personalised advice and treatment plans for skin therapy.

James is a member of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), The Royal College of Surgeons and the International Team for Implantology (ITI). He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the Newcastle Dental Hospital and lectures to dentists on behalf of the Northern Deanery (the Postgraduate Institute for Dentists), a specialist dental laboratory, Ivoclar Vivadent UK and Straumann UK.

James has been appointed the Director of the ITI Northern study club and is Treasurer of the North East Private Dentists group.

James lives in Tynemouth with his wife Lindsay and enjoys keeping fit and healthy, with many outdoor hobbies, particularly as the beach is on the doorstep! He is passionate about skiing, food and travelling to visit new places.

Melbourne Carew

Melbourne Carew

Melbourne qualified from Newcastle University in 2005, since qualifying he has worked in general practice in Middlesbrough where he has built up a loyal following of patients, that led to him being finalist for Best Young Dentist for the North East region two years running. He has shown his commitment to providing quality care by first completing a postgraduate diploma in general dental practice and becoming a member of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners.

Melbourne, along with Samantha, are committed to providing quality care in a relaxed atmosphere and maintaining the ethos of the practice they are now part of. Melbourne's commitment to the quality care of his patients was highlighted by his completion of a Diploma in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons, which took 2 years that allows him to provide a greater variety of treatment, meeting all the needs of his patients.

Andrew Gemmell

Andrew Gemmell - Secretary

Andrew is a dentist with an established reputation for referral endodontics in the North East of England. He is a certified member of the European Society of Endodontology with an MSc in Restorative Dentistry from the University of Leeds. He works in Newcastle at Kingston Park Dental Practice in addition to teaching at Newcatle Dental School.

Kevin Higgins

Kevin Higgins

Kevin is from Liverpool but has spent the past 22 years in the North East. He has a wife and daughter and he lives only a short distance from the practice.

Kevin graduated from Newcastle Dental School in 1991. He has been actively involved with the training and mentoring of younger dentists. He continued his professional development by studying for the Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies from Bristol University following which he passed his membership examinations for the Faculty of General Dental Practice at the Royal College of Surgeons. In addition Kevin has completed both the Sheffield University Dental Implant Foundation course and the 15 month implant training pathway at Newcastle Dental Hospital.

Kevin has a strong interest in providing cosmetic braces and has invested in becoming a certified provider for Invisalign, Six Month Smiles and the Inman Aligner brace systems.

He enjoys dealing with orthodontic (braces), implant, cosmetic and general dental patients and is able to offer dental sedation for those patients who need a little help to overcome any dental anxiety during their treatment. Kevin is able to offer a comprehensive, friendly and honest service to a wide range of patients across the North East.

Paul Shenfine

Christopher Hanford

Originally from Manchester, I moved to the North East to study at Newcastle University where I graduated in 2007, and it has been my home ever since. I am dedicated to postgraduate education and passed the Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons examination from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2010. I enjoy all aspects of dentistry but have a particular interest in minimally invasive aesthetic dentistry, restorative dentistry and cosmetic braces, being proficient in Invisalign, 6 Month Smiles and the Inman Aligner. Chris works at Wessington Dental in Sunderland.

Richard Fretwell

Richard Fretwell

Richard comes from Wakefield in West Yorkshire. He qualified in 1997 from Newcastle University. He purchased Guidepost Dental Practice in November 2003. Richard has a continuing commitment to post-graduate education and is also a member of the Dental Sedation Teachers Group and the British Dental Association. Richard is one of the founder members of NEPD and has been on the committee since its start in November 2005. Richard has an interest in orthodontics, particularly invisible braces, cosmetic dentistry and the treatment of anxious patients. As the practice continues to grow Richard and Josie (his wife) are working hard on maintaining the same family, friendly spirit that has been one of the greatest assets of the practice.
